Washington Avenue Community Garden
Washington Avenue Community Garden is a nearly quarter acre plot in downtown Ukiah. It serves residents of the Washington/Observatory Ave. neighborhood, most of whom live in apartments and do not have space to garden.

Gardener of the Month - Susana!
A Garden Is Born!
The idea for the Washington Avenue Community Garden began with Lynda Myers, the property owner. The garden site had been covered in asphalt for forty years and vacant for twenty, and in 2009, Lynda approached The Gardens Project about turning the space into a community garden. The Gardens Project and Lynda met and talked about the idea, and decided to pursue it. They canvassed the neighborhood, found community support, and worked with the city to figure out and complete the process for the first permit for a community garden.
Development of the garden began in April of 2010. The asphalt was removed from the lot and the earth below it saw light and air for the first time in four decades. Throughout April and May gardeners chose their plots, turned the soil, and thought about what vegetables they wanted to plant for the summer 2010 season. Everyone is very excited!
